An Introduction to Natural Dyeing by Robert and Christine Thresh

A classic guide to natural dyeing with soft muted photos and hand drawn sketches that compliment the age old tradition. A short yet thorough guide to everything you need to know to start experimenting with natural dyeing at home, including a short history, mordants (see note below), supply list, preparation of yarn and cloth, basic dyeing process, experimentation and a color index.

A note of the mordant section of this book—because this book was printed in the 70’s, some of the mordant techniques listed are no longer considered safe and environmentally friendly. The heavy metals suggested such as tin, chrome and copper should be avoided. Instead you can use very effective and safe alternatives such as aluminum acetate, aluminum potassium sulfate and even soy milk! Iron water from rusty nails can be used in some cases if used in small quantities and with extra caution. You can also experiment with using aluminum or copper pots that will act as a mordant.

This is a vintage book in great condition with some minor aging.
